I do believe that some of the toughest things we have to deal with when we are parents are our own impulsive reactions. One thing we need to learn is how to stop yelling at kids. Our responsibility is a big one; we are teaching life to our kids, trying to give them the tools they'll need in order to become healthy, happy, successful adults.
Here are 3 key advices on how to stop yelling at kids:
1. There's a basic thing you can remind yourself each time you're yelling at your child. If your start yelling, so will your child. If you express your anger instead of tempering it, so will your child. The relationship between a child and his parents works like a mirror as children take parents as role models. So, in order to stop yelling at kids, I advise parents to remind themselves that they are transferring their own reactions to their child and by doing so, they are creating a situation they won't be able to handle. In a word, practice what you preach.
2. Set up routines with your child for lunch time or bedtime or basically any time of the day. This will help your child follow some simple rules. You can illustrate the steps of the routines with pictures or drawings that you can pin up on the fridge door for example. Kids enjoy fun routines and it's a great way to make them apply rules and stay more or less calm. It's the kind of tools that can help you with how to stop yelling at kids.
3. Talk more with your child. Communicate more often, explain the rules you set up, the punishments you give, make clear what you say "no" to. If your child understands you more, he'll be more willing to obey and accept your decisions and you won't have to yell at him. Always remember that communicating is far more effective than yelling! Learning how to stop yelling at kids requires an extra effort from you but it's worth it. It really is.
I know how difficult it can be to stop yelling at kids but each time you're about to yell, you should remind yourself how difficult to handle the situation can become and what an ineffective choice it is. I know, you don't see it as a choice because you think you can't help it but seeing it as a bad choice is a good way to change! How to stop yelling at kids equals how to start communicating with kids and parenting them more effectively.
